Day 48

Day 48
After we had a good nights rest in Te Anau, we headed off towards Milford Sound. Milford Sound is a bit farther north than Doubtful Sound. It turned out to be an absolutely perfect day, and the views were spectacular.
This is a picture of some of the mountains in the Southern Alps along our drive.

The set of peaks seen below are rarely seen, as the clouds are typically covering them. We were lucky enough to have the perfect day.

Another stop along the way to Milford Sound was called the Chasm. Along the walk we had more incredible pictures of the landscape.

Looking down inside the chasm from a bridge above. The light and water were in the perfect spot to create the rainbow seen below.

The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time. - Henry David Thoreau

We continued along the road and came to a tunnel that was over 1km long. It was almost completey dug by hand and took nearly 25 years to complete. Cool tunnel. The road and tunnel have only been open year around since the late 1970's. We then proceeded down the hill to reach the base of Milford Sound.

In contrast to our rainy day in Doubtful Sound, today was beautiful and sunny.

We spent a few hours down in the sound before making our way back up the hill and through the tunnel. The entrance is seen below. The tunnel was started during the great depression.

Along the drive out of the sound we made a few stops along the way to look at the scenery. Our bus pulled right onto the beach of this lake and then had to turn around, some added excitment.

We continued our drive towards Tuatapere where we would be spending the night. We stopped to watch the sunset on Lake Manapouri.

We arrived in Tuatapere at Shooters Backpackers around 7:45pm and had bangers and mash for dinner. Each town in New Zealand likes to stake it's claim to fame, and Tuatapere is the sausage capital of New Zealand. We played some table tennis (Andrea won) and relaxed for the evening.

  1. Hey guys! This pics are awesome! Thanks so much for my dolphin necklace and for all of the birthday wishes!! They really made for a special day, so thank you! Of course I had lots of fun - had a party where the theme was "would you still be my friend if I wore this?" Hilarious. Glad to hear you are both doing so well - what an amazing experience! love, kristin
